School gardening

Food security is a key element for disaster preparedness. The school management planted maize and eggplants to supplement food supply to the school. In March 2017 farmers in most parts of Uganda were faced with the armyworm pest that attacked and demolished maize gardens not sparing the school garden either. This came at a time when the country was banking on periodical rains to fend off the pangs of food insecurity that was caused by prolonged dry spells.

The pest was rapidly spreading across Africa. This outbreak forced the United Nations Food and Agriculture organization (FAO) to ask countries to step up surveillance and response measures to protect a great percentage that depend on Agriculture.

Despite of the outbreak, the school was able to fight the pests by spraying pesticides recommended by Government and fortunately managed to harvest around 600kgs of maize corns that is being milled to produce maize flour to feed the school.

The eggplant harvest was also successful and children are enjoying their meals. The school management has planned to plant for the next season.
